The Nuclear Bunker Beneath Bucharest’s Casa Poporului

Refrence : B/YO-0425 – Casa Poporului Bunker

If you think the visible portion of Bucharest’s Casa Poporului (The People’s House) is impressive, wait until you explore what lies beneath. Officially known today as the Palace of the Parliament, it is the heaviest civilian administrative building on Earth. But for urban explorers and history buffs, the real marvel is hidden deep in its underbelly.

92 Meters of Pure Concrete Shielding

Dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu was notoriously paranoid about a potential nuclear conflict. When construction began in 1984, he didn’t just demand a grand palace to showcase his regime’s power; he wanted an unassailable underground fortress designed to survive a high-magnitude earthquake (above 8.0 on the Richter scale) and consecutive tactical nuclear strikes.

The building plunges eight to nine stories straight into the earth. Down at the very bottom level sits the ultimate anti-atomic bunker.

The scale of this subterranean shield is immense:

  • The Radiation Slab: The main bunker features 1.5-meter-thick reinforced concrete walls. Crucially, they are capped by an anti-shattering plate (placă de eclatare) engineered specifically to absorb shockwaves and prevent radiation penetration.
  • The Operational Core: Designed as the absolute wartime command center, the main operations room was built to hold a massive central table surrounded by 3D relief maps of Romania. From this desk, secure encrypted telephone lines linked directly to every single military unit in the country.
  • Imported Air Filtration: Ceaușescu strictly ordered that only Romanian materials be used in the building. The lone exception? The bunker’s life support. Engineers secretly imported high-capacity Swedish air pumps fitted with advanced anti-chemical and anti-radiation filters, hard-cast straight into the concrete walls alongside 12 dedicated storage rooms just for backup filters.

A Hidden Network of Tunnels

Connecting this subterranean command post to the outside world is a labyrinth of secret escape routes. There are roughly 20 kilometers of underground tunnels meticulously mapped out under Bucharest.

These tunnels weren’t just narrow utility crawlspaces; they were wide concrete corridors explicitly designed to allow small electric-motor vehicles to transport leadership and troops quickly under the city without using combustible fuel that could deplete oxygen.

The primary lines link the bunker directly to the Ministry of Defense, the Cotroceni Palace, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (the former Communist Party Central Committee).

To prevent a breach from compromising the entire network, the pathways are divided by massive, automated blast doors weighing seven tons each. These doors can instantly seal shut to isolate sections of the tunnels hermetically in the event of an explosion, gas leak, or breach.

Bunker Breakdown: Quick Specs

FeatureDetails
LocationBucharest, Romania
Subterranean DepthApprox. 92 meters (302 feet) underground
Levels8 to 9 distinct basement floors
Wall Thickness1.5 meters (4.9 feet) of reinforced concrete + shock plate
Seismic RatingDesigned to withstand earthquakes greater than 8.0 Richter
Tunnel Network~20 km of secret vehicular passageways with 7-ton blast doors

Fun Fact: The building itself is so incredibly massive—constructed from over a million cubic meters of Romanian marble, rich wood, and heavy steel—that it actually sinks about 6 millimeters into the ground every single year due to its sheer weight.

New 125 Anti-Tito bunker references

In our latest database expansion, 125 new Anti-Tito Bunker references have been successfully integrated into the ROBOTA mapping platform. This update marks one of the most comprehensive spatial releases since our project’s inception, shedding fresh light on the dense defensive network constructed by the Romanian regime in the early 1950s during the height of the geopolitical rift between Bucharest and Belgrade.

WWBOTA events in May

Get your equipment ready and check your antennas, because May 2026 is shaping up to be extremely busy in the international WWBOTA calendar! We have a marathon of activations ahead of us covering all of Europe: from the Historic Counties (HC26) event in the United Kingdom, which runs throughout the month, to the ‘May Liberation’ anniversary award, organized by our colleagues in the Czech Republic (OKBOTA). Furthermore, the beginning of the month brings an absolute premiere with the activation of the SF3HF callsign in Sweden, marking the official debut of SMBOTA locations in the global circuit. Whether you are field activators or home hunters, this month offers no moment of respite – it is the ideal time to bring the bunkers out of the silence of history and back to life on the airwaves!

The main event organized by UKBOTA (United Kingdom Bunkers on the Air) for May 2026 is entitled Historic Counties (HC26). It takes place throughout the entire month (May 1–31, 2026) and is dedicated to celebrating the historic county structure of the United Kingdom and the Channel Islands. During this special activation, radio amateurs are invited to ‘activate’ (operate portable or mobile stations) from historic bunker locations, defense fortifications, or observation points from the Cold War era, offering signal hunters the opportunity to make radio contacts (QSO) with these symbolic sites for the history and civil defense of Great Britain. Info: https://ukbota.net/hc26/

Special OKBOTA Event – ‘May Liberation’ 2026. May 2026 will offer all radio amateurs the opportunity to combine history with our shared hobby. Between May 1–31, 2026, a special event organized by Czech Bunkers On The Air will take place, dedicated to commemorating the liberation and the end of the Second World War. Throughout the month, activators can bring the silence of the Czech bunkers back to life, telling their stories through radio waves. Hunters will have the opportunity to make contacts with locations closely linked to our history, both in times of war and peace. To honor the events of May, participants in both categories can obtain a special award. Info: https://www.okbota.cz/

Special SF3HF Activation: Premiere for SMBOTA in Sweden. Between May 1–3, 2026, the special callsign SF3HF will be active on the shortwave bands (80m – 10m), marking a historic moment for the amateur radio community in Sweden. The event, organized by the SK3BG radio club, will take place at one of the most impressive bunker-museums from the Cold War period and marks the premiere of the B/SM-0001 location within the international network. This activation under the SMBOTA umbrella is particularly significant, being the first of its kind since Sweden officially became part of the WWBOTA (World Wide Bunkers on the Air) organization, offering rare entity hunters the unique opportunity to contact a newly homologated Swedish defense site.

ROBOTA/POTA Reference Overlap

Below you can find ROBOTA reference (B/YO-XXXX) the can be activated along with POTA references near them.

Up to 5 bunkers can be activated at the same time but the activator must be within 1km/1000m of every bunker’s given coordinates, i.e. only where all activation zones overlap (Venn diagram style).

Why people chase overlaps

  • 🔥 More chasers pile in (two programs = bigger audience)
  • 🏆 Faster progress toward awards
  • 🎒 Perfect for portable/QRP ops — one setup, double credit
  • 📻 Makes otherwise “rare” river references easier to activate

Winterfest 2026 Activations

Celebrating the spirit of amateur radio and historical exploration, the WorldWide BOTA (Bunkers on the Air) Winterfest 2026 brought together enthusiasts willing to brave the cold and activate the silent sentinels of the past. Among the highlights of the event were two significant activations led by YO3BEE (Bogdan) and YO3DYL (Dana), joined by YO3BEL (Sara) and YO3GPH (Adrian), putting the historic fortifications of the Bucharest defensive belt on the air.

🛡️ Activation Highlights

The team successfully activated two historic locations, bridging the gap between WWII history and modern communication:

  • B/YO-0040 – Fortul IV Tunari: A key site in the defensive ring of Bucharest, where portable stations handled a steady flow of chasers eager to log this historic bunker.
  • B/YO-0018 – Fortul I Chitila: Another successful operation, navigating winter weather and challenging seasonal propagation to ensure the fort’s signal reached across the bands.

🎓 Mentorship & Elmering

Beyond the technical success of the activations, YO3BEE (Bodgan) and YO3DYL (Dana) stood out for their commitment to “Elmering.” Throughout the Winterfest, they took the time to mentor fellow operators, sharing their expertise in:

  • Portable Efficiency: Techniques for quick station setup in rugged, cold environments.
  • Logistics & Planning: Navigating the specific requirements of both POTA (Parks on the Air) and BOTA(Bunkers on the Air) programs.
  • Operating Excellence: Teaching new activators how to manage pileups and optimize signal reach with modest portable gear.

Their dedication to growing the community ensures that the next generation of portable operators is well-prepared to take their radios into the field, regardless of the season.
